Person First. Because language matters. Let’s start them young!
Person first language puts the person before the disability and describes what a person has, not who a person is. For example, instead of saying “she is a Down syndrome child” you would say “she is a child with Down syndrome”
Important to note: Person First language is widely preferred in the Down syndrome community, but is not always the case for others. There are many ways a person may choose to be referred to. It is always important to find out their preference, just ask!
